Because I am from the Sooner State, after all...

Because of the awesomeness that is Ubuntu Server, I'm going to be able to get the new web site up and running sooner than I thought.

I managed to back up the entire webserver onto a private local server I set up. It was remarkably simple to do (go Ubuntu!), and it runs great on my Dad's old 566MHz Celeron eMachine. :) It doesn't take a fast computer to run as a pretty decent server, so this seemed like a good use of the poor old fella, which was otherwise collecting dust. I even set it up to use an old wireless USB dongle I had for it's networking...so basically no wires attached (as it doesn't need a monitor, mouse, or keyboard--I just ssh into it from my desktop and do everything from there!).

So, now that everything is safely backed up and running, I'll make some last-minute checks on everything, get some content ready to post, and then we'll plan on having the site up and in full production by Tuesday, 11:59pm (though, I'm guessing it'll be up by 7 or 8pm at the latest).

I'm excited about the new site (well, actually 3 sites!), and I hope they will work out and everyone will enjoy the new content.

Ed Says, "I'm OK!"

Thank goodness, Ed has posted again on his blog. I was starting to get worried. Go check out his new post, leave a comment of support, and breathe a sigh of relief!

Nat Friedman's Tweetable Script Challenge

Submitted by felixruina on 11 April, 2008 - 19:48.

Yesterday Nat Friedman (really famous in the Open Source world) posted a friendly challenge on his blog to fellow programmers.

The challenge was this: Twitter limits it's posts ("tweets") to 140 characters. So, the challenge is to come up with the best one-line program (or shell script) that falls under twitter's 140 character limit.

Here is Nat's first-try example script:

s="-<";while true;do echo -ne "$s\r";s=`sed 's/->$/-<-/;s/^/;s/--/->/;'<<<$s`;sleep 0.1;done

I've done a little shell scripting here and there, but this just looks like jibberish to me. Yet, if I paste it into my Linux terminal, it's a nifty little program that creates a fun little animation.

And that's pretty good. But you would be amazed at what some of the programmers who stepped up to Nat's challenge were able to come up with!

You can read the contest results here, on Nat's blog.

Here's another great ImprovEverywhere mission. This one is just really fun. They decided to give some little-league baseball players the game of their lives:
